In the interest of providing Republican candidates with a simple but effective way to share their message with voters, and in the interest of providing our members with tools for making an informed vote, the Paulding County GOP is pleased to announce a brand new feature of our website: The Candidates’ Stump.

What it is:

The Candidates’ Stump provides Republican candidates with an opportunity to publish a written summary of their campaign platform. Essentially, the Candidates’ Stump is an online version of the introductory speech a candidate would make at a monthly business meeting. Tell the PCGOP membership who you are, what you stand for and what you plan to do if elected. Our members benefit by learning more about you as a candidate, and you benefit from an opportunity to reach the entirety of the PCGOP membership.

We hope that the Candidates’ Stump will prove to be a valuable resource for both candidates and voters. The Candidates’ Stump is not intended to be a substitute for a campaign website, but rather to serve as a centralized source of information that members of the PCGOP can review as they determine which candidates to vote for in the 2012 Republican primaries.

Who can participate:

Any candidate who will be on a Paulding County Republican ballot for the 2012 primaries.

How to participate:

Statements for the Candidate’s Stump should be emailed to info [at] pauldingrepublicans [dot] org in the form of a word document(.doc) or text file(.txt). No PDF files or images with the information will be accepted.

Guidelines:

Please limit your statement to 750 words or less. Please include a picture of yourself that can be posted alongside your statement. We recommend that you include some type of contact information for readers who want to ask questions, learn more or volunteer for your campaign.

Your statement may include a call for volunteers, but please refrain from using the Candidates’ Stump for soliciting donations.

While we do not question the integrity and strong moral fiber of our party’s candidates, we do want to state for the record that no personal attacks of any kind will be published. We trust that the candidates who choose to participate will maintain a positive tone. Appropriate content for your platform statement includes biographical information, relevant experience and an overview of your position on the issues. If you have any questions about what is or is not appropriate for the Candidates’ Stump, please do not hesitate to ask.

Important information about how the Candidates’ Stump works:

Statements will be posted in the order in which they are received. The Candidates’ Stump is a service being offered, free of charge, to all Republican candidates whose constituency falls, in whole or in part, within the boundaries of Paulding County. Participation is strictly voluntarily, and the appearance of a candidate’s statement should not be construed as an official or unofficial endorsement of any kind on the part of the PCGOP. Likewise, the lack of a statement should not be construed as lack of endorsement or personal exclusion.

The publication of a statement should not be construed as an expression of the party’s views or opinions. The content of a statement solely represents the views of that particular candidate and is not an indication of the approval or affirmation of the Paulding County Republican Party, its officers and/or its members.

Proposed legislation allowing nonpartisan elections for countywide offices would remove a necessary tool for voters deciding between candidates they may know little about, a county political leader says.

Joseph Gullett, chairman of the Paulding County Republican Party, said he opposes the bill because voters — who typically are not closely engaged in the political process — need to know a candidate’s philosophy toward public service even if the office’s duties are state-mandated.

“It’s the first filtering process,” he said. “Voters should know where they stand.”

District 137 state Rep. Allen Peake, R-Macon, recently pre-filed the legislation to allow counties to ask their local legislative delegation to remove party labels from countywide elected offices like probate judge or county commissioner.

At least two Paulding elected officials say the bill, if approved, would not change how they currently do their jobs as Republicans.

Paulding Tax Commissioner Bill Watson said he sees no reason to change how he runs for election.

“I’m happy with my party affiliation,” he said.

Elected offices which set policy should be partisan, Watson said, though he admitted “not all offices set policy.”

Sheriff Gary Gulledge noted his office mostly operates under requirements set in Georgia law, which mandates more than 600 duties and responsibilities, according to the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association.

However, even if the bill passed, Gulledge said it would not affect his political stance on issues.

“I will continue to be Republican,” he said.

Terry Norris, executive director of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association, said he hopes Peake’s bill will get a fair hearing in the upcoming 2012 session of the Georgia General Assembly.

Tax commissioners, court clerks, probate judges and sheriffs operate based on the law, not political affiliation, Norris said.

It also would lessen the cost of elections by requiring only one election rather than two if both parties field candidates, he added.

Warm wishes to all of my fellow Republicans on this chilly but beautiful Veteran’s Day! Words hardly seem sufficient to express my gratitude to the men and women who have served, and who continue to serve, our country. Sometimes it’s a bumpy road, but I never stop believing that we live in the greatest country on earth, and we have veterans to thank for the honor and privilege of being Americans.

Thank you to all of you who have served or are currently serving in our nation’s armed forces. I believe I can speak for all members of the Paulding County Republican Party when I say that you have our deepest gratitude. Simply put, our freedom wouldn’t exist without you. That gratitude extends to the family members of our service men and women as well. Your sacrifices are many and great, and we thank you.

We can never thank our veterans enough. We set aside this one day of the year to honor these brave men and women, but we should never forget that we wake up as a free people in a free country each and every day because of the courage and sacrifice of great Americans.

Thank you and God bless you. May we all enjoy this beautiful fall day with a prayer in our hearts for all of our nation’s veterans, both those still with us and those who have departed.

Respectfully,

There are children in Paulding County that do not have food to eat when they are not at school. Various churches and individuals have stepped up to provide ready-to-eat food that is sent home with these children when they leave school on Friday afternoon. This is the only nourishment these kids receive over the weekend or when school is out of session.

The Paulding County GOP is joining in these efforts. We have committed to providing a weekend food supply for 10 children at Robert’s Elementary from now through the end of the school year. Each week, a volunteer from the PCGOP will be delivering our food donations to Robert’s Elementary. Our goal is to provide each child with 1 breakfast item each day, 1 bowl of pasta each day, 1 granola/snack bar each day, and either fruit, pudding cup or crackers and a juice box/caprisun each day. For these 10 children, this food will be most, if not all, of what they have to eat for the entire weekend.

Here’s how you can help:

We need individuals to donate ready-to-eat food items and/or money with which food can be purchased. We also need volunteers to help with collecting, sorting, storing and delivering the food.

If you would like to make a donation or volunteer to help with the Back Pack Program, please contact Marcia Evans, our corresponding secretary. Marcia is coordinating our efforts, and you can reach her via email at marcia [at] pauldingrepublicans [dot] org.

As Republicans, we believe that the best way to help those in need is to come together as a community. Through churches, charitable organizations and the work of caring individuals, we can provide support to those in need of assistance. The Back Pack Program is an opportunity for us to put our principles into practice. We are very excited to be a part of such a worthy cause and hope that you are able to join us in our efforts.
